We’re pleased to announce that the Flying Monkey IRC Network now has an official listing in the Retro Directory, filed under the Websites category. If you’re not familiar with Retro Directory, it’s a community-curated catalog celebrating the old-school corners of the internet — sites, services, and networks that keep the spirit of the pre-social-media web alive. It felt like a natural fit for an IRC network still going strong in an era dominated by Discord and Slack.

IRC has been quietly powering communities since 1988, and we like to think Flying Monkey carries that torch forward — a place for real-time chat without the algorithm, the ads, or the noise. Getting a nod from a directory built around preserving that kind of internet culture feels like a fitting recognition.

Hi everyone,

So I’ve spent my weekend doing upgrades to our website. it’s currently based off WordPress with a theme I kinda like.

The issue I’ve kinda ‘fixed’ is that, being an older WordPress theme, it was built around older versions of BootStrap and a number of other libraries. It seems the theme author is no longer working on this theme.

Never fear though. I’ve managed to do some magic and made sure all the libraries this theme uses are brought up to date, and also used this as an opportunity to tidy a few other things up. From my own testing, things seem to be working,

If you notice any weirdness, try a cache clear on your browser first (particularly if you’ve visited the site over the last few days while I’ve been working on it), otherwise let me know in either the #FlyingMonkey or #RetroComputing channel.

Hi everyone,

Apologies for the brief outage. The IRC server had a hiccup and crashed, and an error in the config caused it to fail to restart.

This has now been rectified, and everything is starting to return to normal.

I’ll be running some maintenance on Friday the 24th of July 2026 @ 8pm (Sydney time). No downtime or interruptions are expected, though we’ll send a notification within IRC if this becomes necessary.

Fire up your favourite IRC client and connect to our server at irc.flyingmonkey.au:6697 with TLS enabled. Once connected, join the channel #RetroComputing.
